The agency provided description reads as follows: In this video, Alex Haley, author, discusses his exploration of his family origins back to Africa, which led to the writing of "Roots", a saga of an American family from its African tribal origins to slavery and then freedom in the new world, with Joseph Harris, chairman of the history department at Howard University and Edward Mattos, program manager of arts and humanities at USIA. The producers of this video are the United States Information Agency and Marvin Lipman.

Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (August 11, 1921 – February 10, 1992) was an American writer and the author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family.
